Remember what 2001 looked like from a technology point of view? Since then, Continuent has pioneered the need for cloud-savvy business-critical MySQL databases that are platform-agnostic, highly-available, and globally-scaling.
Continuent’s flagship product, Tungsten Clustering, is a tightly-integrated and fully-tested solution handling billions of transactions per day and protecting over $20 billion dollars in annual revenue.
For his six-month sabbatical, the Founder and CEO of Continuent, Eero Teerikorpi, tells the story of the beginning of Continuent and the bold vision that got us here.
Hello, I’m Eero Teerikorpi, Founder and CEO of Continuent. Greetings from Northern California, Lake Tahoe region, winter wonderland at this time of year. I’m originally from Finland, thus I enjoy snow and cold more than most people do.
I’m about to start my sabbatical for six months, but don’t worry, the company will be in good hands, run by a team of engineers with 20+ years of experience in data replication, database clustering, and data connectivity. So you’ll be in good hands.
We started Continuent some 20 years ago in 2001. I’m not sure if you remember what 2001 looked like from a technology point of view. Microsoft Windows ruled the world. Linux was making some in-roads.
Oracle was the database of choice for most people. IBM db2, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase if you remember, was also a choice.
At the time also, cloud (AWS and other players) didn’t really exist; AWS was launched in March 2001 - at the same time we started thinking about business-critical MySQL.
“MySQL?” you may ask - at the time especially - did we really need another database?
Who on earth would build a business-critical application on open source, on MySQL, and platform independent?
We had a bold vision and we chose to do it. And that’s what we’ve been doing the past 20 years.
Today we’re really happy to announce and see that we have some of the most business-critical, some of the biggest MySQL properties in the world, running on Continuent Tungsten Clusters, in geographically distributed fashion.
So this is a really good time for me to take a break. You’ll be in good hands.
Enjoy the new year, 2022. And we’ll see each other soon enough. Bye now!
